Caring for your scarf

Here is our care guide for washing and maintaining your wool, silk, cashmere, cotton and other blend scarves.  We recommend that you check the care label and instructions for your scarf in the first instance. These additional instructions maybe of help to you.

Wool

Our wool scarves are essential to keep us warm for the winter.  Not only do they keep us warm and snug in the winter, they look amazing too.

Wool is delicate and can be a tricky fabric to wash.  The material is very strong and durable but can become damaged easily if the wrong product or technique is used when cleaning it.

Always read the instructions on the care label before washing your scarf.

Hand washing is considered the safest way to wash your wool scarf.  Always ensure you are using lukewarm water when washing your scarf as wool can shrink in hot water. It’s best to use a washing detergent designed for woollen or delicate fabrics.

  • Add the laundry detergent to  lukewarm water. We find it best to use a liquid detergent as it mixes with the water quicker.  If you decide to use a powdered detergent, make sure that the grains are dissolved before adding your scarf.
  • Add your scarf to the water and gently swirl in the soapy water, ensuring that the scarf is totally immersed in the water. Gently massage the scarf to loosen and lift any stains.  Do not rub or twist the scarf as this could stretch the wool.
  • Rinse the scarf in clean water. Gently remove any excess water, do not wring and dry flat. Reshape the scarf whilst it is damp.
  • If needed iron on a wool setting.

If your washing machine has a delicate or wool cycle and you prefer to machine wash, do so with caution.

  • Place the scarf preferably in a laundry bag before putting it in the washing machine. This prevents any snagging or damage to the scarf.
  • Add the laundry detergent for woollen or delicate fabric in the detergent compartment or using a dosing device which sits on top of your scarf in the machine.
  • Ensure that you have set the correct cycle for washing in the machine. Promptly remove the scarf once the cycle has finished and dry flat. Reshape the scarf if needed whilst it is a little damp.
  • If needed iron on a wool setting.

Always read your care label or instructions on the scarf for washing and care of your scarf.

Silk

A silk scarf can sometimes be pricey but can be worn for decades providing we care for it properly. Most care labels or instructions will recommend that the scarf be dry cleaned only.  If you still prefer to wash your scarf at home because of the expense, do so with caution.  Do not place your beloved silk scarf in the washing machine as the delicate fibres can get damaged in the washing machine.

  • Pre-treat any stains on the scarf like make up or perfume stains, by applying a dab of mild laundry detergent to the stain. Massage the detergent into the stain with your fingers, taking care not to rub or scrub the scarf.
  • Fill a sink or bucket with cool water and add a mild laundry detergent. We find it best to use a liquid detergent as it mixes with the water quicker. If you decide to use a powdered detergent, make sure that the grains are dissolved before adding your scarf.
  • Immerse the scarf into the water and gently massage or swirl the scarf to loosen and lift and stains. Take care not to rub the scarf as it can damage the fibres.
  • Rinse the scarf in cool water
  • To safely remove the excess water, place the scarf between 2 towels. Gently roll the towels to remove as much moisture as possible. Do not wring or twist as this may damage the scarf.
  • Either lay flat to dry or hang to air dry on a plastic hanger. Using a wooden or metal hanger can stain the scarf.  Keep away from direct heat or sunlight.
  • Iron your silk scarf whilst it is slightly damp using the silk setting on your iron. Iron on the reverse placing a clean white lint free cloth between the silk scarf and the iron.

Always read your care label or instructions on the scarf for washing and care of your scarf.

Cashmere scarves can be expensive and are delicate.  If your scarf is to last for years and years, then it will need some tlc to maintain it. Fortunately, it is easy to keep your scarf or pashmina looking pretty.

Always check your care label or instructions, if the label says dry clean only then ensure that you dry-cleaner does have experience cleaning cashmere.

If you prefer to wash you cashmere by hand
